¿Qué hacer con los “indios”? El rol de la filología en la Argentina del siglo XIX

Abstract

En el presente trabajo interpretamos una serie de intervenciones filológicas de cuatro actores(políticos) del escenario intelectual argentino del siglo XIX: Vicente Fidel López, Juan Mariano Larsen,Miguel Ángel Mossi y Bartolomé Mitre. Según observamos, estos hombres de letras recurrieron a lalingüística comparativa como soporte teórico-metodológico en sus intentos de modelar retórica ycientíficamente la historia americana y, como parte de ella, la figura del “indio”, otorgándole un lugarespecífico en el imaginario social hispanoamericano y reivindicando (o no) sus vínculos étnicos conculturas milenarias asiáticas y/o europeas.

: In this article, we offer a critical interpretation of a series of philological interventions of four (political) actors of the Argentinian intellectual scene of the nineteenth century: Vicente Fidel López, Juan Mariano Larsen, Miguel Ángel Mossi and Bartolomé Mitre. We consider that these scholars resorted to comparative linguistics as a theoretical-methodological support in their attempts to rhetorically and scientifically shape American history and, as part of it, the figure of the “Indian”, granting it a specific place in the Hispanic-American social imaginary and claiming (or not) their ethnic ties with ancient Asian and/or European cultures.
