Plebe, voz y justicia en el siglo XVI: El Río de la Plata y el caso Sebastián Caboto

Abstract

El presente trabajo se centra en los documentos judiciales ligados al Río de la Plata durante el siglo XVI, particularmente los referentes a Sebastián Caboto y el caso del destierro de tres hombres de su tripulación. A partir de los juicios entablados contra el capitán general y los pocos acusados oídos durante su viaje, este artículo aborda los modos de aparición de la voz de la plebe en ese marco institucional. La palabra y presencia de esos sujetos en los pleitos contra Caboto, donde van respondiendo interrogatorios y opinando sobre los acontecimientos más relevantes ligados a la violencia ejercida desde el poder, pone en escena una importancia insospechada. Los testimonios de estos sujetos iletrados, cuyas historias desaparecen entre los pliegos del archivo, están a la espera de quien quiera oírlos. Este trabajo dirige a esos hombres de la plebe, figuras olvidadas en la historia narrativa y literaria rioplatense, y los coloca en el centro de su análisis.

This paper focuses on the judicial documents linked to the River Plate during the 16th century, particularly those referring to Sebastian Cabot and the case of the exile of three men from his crew. Based on the lawsuits against the General Captain for the events occurring during his trip, this article deals with the modes of appearance of the voice of the plebs in this institutional framework. The notable presence of these men in the lawsuits against Cabot, their audible voices answering questions and giving their opinions on the most relevant events about the violence exercised by power, puts on the scene an unsuspected importance. The testimonies of these illiterate persons, whose stories disappear between the pages of the archive, are waiting for those who want to hear them. This work selects these men from the common people, forgotten figures in the narrative and literary history of the River Plate, and places them at the center of its analysis.
