Nuevos tiempos, viejos banquetes: versiones tardoantiguas de un género clásico

Abstract

Uno de los rasgos fundamentales de la Antigüedad Tardía es la reelaboración de tópicos heredados de la tradición, en la tensión entre homenaje y desafío. La búsqueda de una nueva voz es una preocupación común a los hombres del período, si bien esta debe ser enmarcada en la práctica de la imitatio, que sigue siendo un imperativo literario y moral. Como resultado de estas operaciones, se producen numerosas modificaciones en géneros ya existentes (la metamorfosis es otro rasgo de la poética del período), que muchas veces desencadenan en la creación de nuevos géneros. El género del banquete filosófico, flexible y permeable, permite interesantes transformaciones que reflejan los cambios culturales del Tardoantiguo, en tanto que los autores buscan filiar sus obras a los géneros literarios clásicos, pero al mismo tiempo intentan mostrar una novitas que responde al nuevo contexto al que pertenecen. Nuestro trabajo analiza cómo Macrobio y Marciano Capela, autores del siglo V d. C., proponen sus propias versiones del banquete platónico. Saturnalia es un banquete filosófico que subvierte elementos de su modelo para adaptarse a la moral austera de los nuevos tiempos, observando de manera consciente y explícita las normas del diálogo platónico. Por su parte, De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii es un banquete de bodas de contenido doctrinal sobre las Artes liberales, que subvierte tópicos y frustra las expectativas del lector, en un intento de criticar y desestabilizar valores centrales de la cultura romana clásica y tardía. En este marco, analizaremos los mecanismos discursivos y los propósitos de cada texto y autor, sus propósitos, las transformaciones que esto supone sobre el género del banquete filosófico, y la proyección de estos cambios al ámbito cultural de la Antigüedad Tardía.

One of the main features of Late Antiquity is the reworking of topics inherited from tradition, in the constant tension between homage and challenge. The search for a new voice is a concern men of the period have in common, although it must always be framed in the practice of imitatio, which remains strong as a literary and moral imperative. As a result of these operations, numerous modifications occur in already existing genres (metamorphosis is another feature of the poetics of the period), which often trigger the creation of new genres. The genre of the philosophical symposium, flexible and permeable, allows interesting transformations that reflect the cultural changes of Late Antiquity, while the authors seek to affiliate their works to the classical literary genres, but at the same time try to show a novitas that responds to the new context to which they belong. Our work analyzes how Macrobius and Martianus Capella, authors of the fifth century C.E., propose their own versions of the Platonic symposium. Macrobius’ Saturnalia is a philosophical banquet that subverts elements of its model to adapt to the austere morality of the new times, consciously and explicitly observing the norms of Platonic dialogue. On the other hand, Martianus’ De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii is a wedding banquet of doctrinal content dealing with the Liberal arts, which subverts topics and frustrates the expectations of the reader, in an attempt to criticize and destabilize core values of classical and late Roman culture. In this framework, we will analyze the discursive mechanisms and purposes of each text and author, their purposes, the transformations that this implies on the genre of the philosophical symposium, and the projection of these transformations to the cultural field of Late Antiquity.
