Sobre el sentido de empaízō (y el juego invencible de Afrodita) en el tercer canto coral de Antígona de Sófocles (vv. 781-800)

Abstract

El presente artículo explora el sentido que asume el verbo empaízō, compuesto de παίζω (“jugar”), en el contexto grave y mortífero de la escena trágica y, en particular, cuando quienes juegan son dioses como Afrodita y Eros. Para ello, seleccionamos el tercer estásimo de Antígona de Sófocles (vv. 781-800), en cuyos últimos versos se les adjudica a estas divinidades el acto de jugar que, hipotetizamos, habilita una lectura lúdica de todos sus actos en la oda. Además, sostenemos que una consideración adecuada de la esfera de acción de estas divinidades habilita una lectura lo suficientemente amplia del estásimo como para considerarlo un tablero que abarca a todas las piezas del conflicto trágico.

This paper explores the meaning of the verb παίζω (“to play”) in the serious and deadly context of the tragic scene and, specifically, when gods like Aphrodite and Eros play games. Specifically, we chose the third stasimon of Sophocles’ Antigone (vv. 781-800), whose final verses attribute these divinities the act of playing, which –we hypothesize– allows an interpretation of all their actions in the ode as play. We also think that an adequate consideration of the sphere of action of these divinities enables a reading of the stasimon broad enough to consider it a chessboard that encompasses all the pawns of the tragic conflict.
