El Cristo de La Cumbre: aspectos histórico-culturales de una “montaña santa” en Córdoba, Argentina

Abstract

La localidad de La Cumbre, en las sierras del centro de Argentina, es escenario de concurridas visitas al Cristo Redentor y su Vía Crucis, situados por encima de los 1250 m de altitud. El presente artículo pone el foco en el acceso, construcción y utilización del espacio sacralizado con imaginería religiosa en este punto elevado del Valle de Punilla. La investigación incorpora la observación participante y entrevistas informales a peregrinos, turistas, residentes y encargados de tiendas de recordatorios, además de la visita a museos y lugares de interés patrimonial. Desde el ámbito de la antropología de montañas sagradas, el caso de estudio del Cristo Redentor de La Cumbre permite ahondar en la comprensión del papel del turismo y la religiosidad popular en la historia de los espacios ceremoniales de altura en Latinoamérica.

The place called The Summit, in the central Argentine mountains, is the scene of crowded visits to Christ the Redeemer and the Way of the Cross, located at an altitude of over 1,250 m. This article focuses on the access, construction and use of the holy place with religious imagery at this high point in the Punilla Valley. This investigation includes participant observation and informal interviews with pilgrims, tourists, residents and souvenir shop owners, as well as museums visits and places of heritage interest. From the ambit of the anthropology of holy mountains, the case study of Christ the Redeemer, of the Summit, lets us delve deeper into the understanding of the role of tourism and popular religiosity in the history of ceremonial places at high altitude in Latin America.
