El santuario de San Miguel de Aralar: patrimonio religioso e intangible en una montaña sagrada vasca

Abstract

En las últimas décadas se observa un incremento del turismo religioso hacia los santuarios de montaña vascos, entre los que se destaca por su patrimonio material e intangible el de San Miguel de Aralar. Construido en las alturas de una cordelada kárstica dotada de simas y cavernas subterráneas, el templo de San Miguel Excelsis es un monumental centro de peregrinaje cristiano ornado con leyendas medievales de dragones y caballeros condenados. El complejo ceremonial se encuentra emplazado debajo del pico Altxueta, que ostenta antenas de telecomunicaciones y un hito deportivo erigido por un club de montañismo local. La autora compartió con jóvenes devotos locales la subida a pie desde el monasterio de Zamartze hasta el santuario en las alturas de Aralar y realizó una breve ascensión en solitario a la cima Altxueta. En sucesivas visitas al templo de San Miguel Excelsis entrevistó informalmente al sacristán custodio y a pastores que trabajan y viven a los pies del macizo. Asimismo, se familiarizó con diversas versiones de la leyenda del caballero Teodosio de Goñi y observó la realización de ritos populares de prevención y curación por medio del contacto con cadenas de hierro y del inusual procedimiento denominado «escuchar al dragón».

In recent decades there has been an increase in religious tourism to Basque mountain sanctuaries, among which San Miguel de Aralar stands out for its tangible and intangible heritage. Built on the heights of a karstic mountain range with chasms and underground caverns, the temple of San Miguel Excelsis is a monumental Christian pilgrimage center adorned with medieval legends of dragons and condemned knights. The ceremonial complex is located below the Altxueta peak, which boasts telecommunications antennas and a sports landmark erected by a local mountaineering club. The author shared with young local devotees the ascent on foot from the monastery of Zamartze to the sanctuary on the heights of Aralar and made a short solo ascent to the Altxueta peak. In successive visits to the temple of San Miguel Excelsis She informally interviewed the custodian sacristan and shepherds who work and live at the foot of the massif. She also became familiar with different versions of the legend of the knight Teodosio de Goñi and observed the performance of popular rites of prevention and healing by means of contact with iron chains and the unusual procedure known as «listening to the dragon».
