Asociación Latino-Americana de Ictiólogos y Herpetólogos (ALAIH)

Abstract

La ALAIH (Asociación Latinoamericana de Ictiólogos y Herpetólogos) fue una sociedad que se creó el 21 de octubre de 1959 para reunir a los especialistas en peces, anfibios y reptiles de toda Latinoamérica. El acta fundacional se firmó en la ciudad de La Plata en dicha fecha y comenzó a funcionar de inmediato. La ALAIH operó durante la década de 1960 y hasta los primeros años de los años 70, y en ese período publicó varios números de su boletín con notas y novedades. Lamentablemente luego de algo más de diez años esta sociedad dejó de existir, tal vez debido a una mezcla de factores, como la gran extensión geográfica que abarcaba, la diversidad de especialidades, la falta de recursos económicos, y las formas de comunicación de la época. La ALAIH no fue la precursora o el germen inicial de la Asociación Herpetológica Argentina, pero si fue un primer intento por nuclear especialistas abocados al estudio de los anfibios y reptiles en nuestra región, y por ello creemos importante rescatar su historia y la documentación existente.

ALAIH (Asociación Latinoamericana de Ictiólogos y Herpetólogos, Latin American Association of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists) was created on October 21st, 1959 as an organization to bring together the fish, amphibian and reptile specialists of all Latin American countries. On that day, the founding act was signed in La Plata city, and the existence of the association started then and there. ALAIH was active during the 1960s and the early 1970s; several issues of its Bulletin, containing notes and news, were published during that period. Unfortunately, this association ceased to exist after little more than ten years, probably due to a combination of factors that took their toll on it, including the extensive geographical range that it spanned, the diversity of specialized fields and the lack of financial resources, as well as characteristics of the modes of communication that prevailed at that time. Although ALAIH was not actually a forerunner of the Argentine Herpetological Association or the germ for its inception, it was the first attempt to gather regional specialists in the study of amphibians and reptiles, hence the importance of salvaging its history and existing documents.
