Maritime Archaeology in Northern Patagonia: Historical Shipwrecks Located between Bahía San Blas and Carmen de Patagones, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract

This chapter presents the ongoing research in the area between Bahía San Blas and Carmen de Patagones in Argentina that combines coastal surveys, excavations, photogrammetric recording, and drone mapping. Since 2018, a series of shipwrecks have been located and recorded in the intertidal and supratidal areas that illustrate the dynamic navigation route that connected Buenos Aires and Montevideo with Patagonian harbours from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. Their findings reveal novel information about maritime trade, maritime transportation, and the exploitation of natural resources on a regional scale.
