La prensa católica de interés general frente a la debacle de la dictadura: Los casos de Familia Cristiana y Esquiú entre 1981 y 1983

Abstract

The months that separated the end of the Malvinas War from the inauguration of Raúl Alfonsín in December 1983 constituted a period of enormous uncertainty for the Church and Catholicism in general. It was also a time of active intervention by the bishops, who assumed a mediating role and worked to bring together military officials and political leaders through the so-called "Reconciliation Service." While this process has been broadly outlined in existing literature, it is necessary to analyze Catholicism beyond its hierarchy, considering it a complex social configuration, marked by power struggles and inhabited by diverse representations of politics and the role of the Church and religion in Argentine society. Based on this premise, our objective is to analyze the contributions of two Catholic general interest magazines, Familia Cristiana and Esquiú, with a particular focus on their perspectives on the political situation, their assessments of the dictatorship experience, and their expectations for the democratic process.

Los meses que separan el final de la guerra de Malvinas de la asunción de Raúl Alfonsín, en diciembre de 1983, constituyeron para la Iglesia y para el catolicismo en general una coyuntura de enorme incertidumbre. Fue también un período de activa intervención de los obispos quienes asumieron un rol mediador y de acercamiento entre militares y dirigentes políticos a través del llamado “Servicio de Reconciliación”. Si bien este proceso ha sido reconstruido a trazos gruesos por la bibliografía existente, se hace necesario analizar al catolicismo más allá de su jerarquía, considerándolo una configuración social compleja, atravesada por disputas de poder y habitada por representaciones diversas sobre la política y el lugar de la Iglesia y la religión en la sociedad argentina. Partiendo de esta presunción, nuestro objetivo es analizar las intervenciones de dos revistas católicas de interés general, Familia Cristiana y Esquiú, considerando en especial sus perspectivas sobre la coyuntura política, sus balances sobre la experiencia de la dictadura y las expectativas frente al proceso democrático.
