Toros en La Habana: Boxeo, cultura y poder (1920-1930)

Abstract

Este trabajo explora los debates culturales y significados sociales que adquirió la visita del boxeador argentino Luis Ángel Firpo a La Habana, durante 1923, en el pináculo de su carrera. A partir de este suceso se indaga la compleja construcción de la identidad de los cubanos de la época, mostrando las ambigüedades étnicas y las subordinaciones y las rebeldías de los sujetos implicados en dicho proceso. Los relatos de integración social de la cultura masiva y la identificación de Firpo como representante de la “raza latina” se cruzaron con otras filiaciones y sentidos de pertenencia de la clase trabajadora afrocubana. Estas tensiones mostraban las expectativas de los propios pugilistas en la construcción de sus trayectorias profesionales, así como las sinuosas identificaciones raciales, de clase y de género que desafiaban a los discursos homogeneizantes en torno al deporte cubano. En la larga duración se llama a reflexionar sobre la supervivencia de complejas polarizaciones y sobre la idea de una conflictiva transculturación.

This work explores the cultural debates and social meanings attributed to the visit of the Argentine boxer Luis Ángel Firpo to Havana, during 1923, at the pinnacle of his career. From this event, the complex construction of the identity of the Cubans of the time is investigated, analyzing the ethnic ambiguities, subordinations and rebellions of the subjects involved in said process. The discourses of social integration of mass culture and the identification of Firpo as a representative of the “Latin race” intersected with other affiliations and senses of belonging of the Afro-Cuban working class. These tensions showed the expectations of the boxers themselves in the construction of their professional trajectories, as well as the sinuous racial, class and gender identifications that challenged the homogenizing discourses around Cuban sport. In the long duration, this article calls for reflection about the survival of complex polarizations and about the idea of a conflictive transculturation.
