Gardel en Buenos Aires, el retorno del hijo pródigo

Abstract

Este trabajo aborda un estudio de caso de activación de patrimonio urbano de "el barrio más porteño" de la ciudad de Buenos Aires; patrimonio que hilvana singularidades artístico-culturales, históricas y religiosas. También pretende contar una historia circular, en la que se entretejen las múltiples recreaciones de una emblemática figura popular -el cantor de tangos Carlos Gardel- y los períodos de ocaso y gloria del barrio que lo vio crecer: el Abasto. Nuestro supuesto es que la reactivación de este patrimonio urbano es imposible de ser pensado fuera de la constante exaltación de la figura mítica de Gardel; en la medida en que ésta es parte fundamental de las creencias, prácticas y representaciones de los habitantes de la ciudad, e incluso de las disputas materiales y simbólicas que se despliegan entre los distintos sectores sociales de este escenario vecinal.

This paper addresses a case study of urban heritage activation of Buenos Aires' most emblematic neighborhood, which weaves artistic, cultural, historical and religious peculiarities. The article also aims to tell a circular story, in which the many recreations of a popular iconic figure -the tango singer Carlos Gardel- are interweaved with periods of decline and glory of the Abasto, the neighborhood where he grew up. Our assumption is that it is impossible to analyze the reactivation of urban heritage here without taking into account the constant celebration of the mythical figure of Gardel, insofar as it is a fundamental part of the beliefs, practices and representations of the inhabitants of the city, as well as of the material and symbolic disputes that unfold between different social sectors of this local scene.
