Ut pictura poesis: Por la restitución de una historiografía de los estudios sobre los textos y las imágenes

Abstract

Este artículo se propone recuperar una historiografía específica de los estudios sobre textos e imágenes [text and image studies] que se realizaron en el transcurso del siglo pasado. Así pues, procede a una selección de antecedentes teóricos e institucionales destacados, no sólo por la originalidad de sus intereses y enfoques de investigación, sino también por la predisposición crítica con que fueron concebidos, analizados y evaluados desde una perspectiva historicista que se remonta a los orígenes y se proyecta hasta la actualidad de la tradición del ut pictura poesis. Inicialmente, se ofrece una introducción sobre esta tradición, tanto para delinear aspectos fundamentales de su historia como para reconocer las inflexiones fundacionales y evolutivas de nuestros estudios, los cuales se entrelazan y confunden a menudo con los estudios comparativos y de cultura visual. Luego se resaltan características distintivas de la genealogía teórico-crítica aquí propuesta, sintetizadas en una cierta inclinación historicista, interdisciplinaria y estética. Finalmente se destacan dos contribuciones que, pese a pasar desapercibidas en el ámbito de nuestros estudios, reafirman cómo la sinergia entre dichas características permite comprender más profundamente las dimensiones de las conversiones entre lo verbal y lo visual que, sin cesar, están mediando las relaciones entre los individuos, ellos y el mundo. Esto conduce a advertir reciprocidades en la diversidad, en donde siguiendo la noción de Wendy Steiner (2023) sobre ´la belleza como interacción´, radicaría la condición estética inherente a los objetos que nuestros estudios privilegian.

This article aims to recover a specific historiography of text and image studies throughout the past century. It selects theoretical and institutional backgrounds which are significant not only for the originality of their interests and research approaches, but also for the critical disposition with which they were conceived, analyzed, and evaluated from a historicist perspective grounded in the ut pictura poesis tradition. Firstly, an introduction to this tradition is provided to enhance comprehension of its history and acknowledge its foundational and evolutionary impact on our studies, which often intertwine with comparative and visual culture studies. Secondly, distinct features of the proposed theoretical-critical genealogy are emphasized, marked by a historicist, interdisciplinary, and aesthetic orientation. Finally, two contributions —overlooked within the realm of text & image studies— are mentioned. They show how the synergy among those characteristics enables a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in the conversions between the verbal and the visual, which continually mediate the interactions among individuals, individuals, and the world. This leads to the recognition of a certain reciprocity in diversity, where —in line with Wendy Steiner’s notion of “beauty as interaction” (2023)— lies the inherent aesthetic condition of the objects privileged in our studies.
