El léxico bizantino de Leoncio de Neápolis en Vida de Juan el limosnero

Abstract

En el marco de la labor de edición bilingüe de este texto hagiográfico, nos abocamos, en lo que respecta al estu­dio lin­güís­tico, a determi­nar la pre­sen­cia de rasgos propios del período bizan­ti­no. Centrándo­nos aquí en el as­pec­to lé­xi­­co, se han detectado voces re­gis­tra­das por los dicciona­rios y por TLG en los siglos precedentes al autor; otras con­tem­poráneas a él y otras que parecen ser cre­aciones. Destacamos estas últimas, sean neologismos o incluso hápax legómena. Se concluye que el Obispo es coherente en su expresión con su intención: en el prólogo declara que busca narrar "con el carácter pedestre, sin adorno y humilde pro­­pio de nosotros, de modo tal que pueda ser ayudado por lo dicho también el "hom­bre común e iletrado" (65 ss.); si bien hay cierto grado de falsa modestia, no miente al decir que se abaja a un público más amplio. Esto se ve en otros rasgos lin­güísticos, que confirman el uso de una len­gua actuali­zada y, a la vez, creativa, que lla­mara la atención del oyente. De tal modo, la len­gua colabora con la intención di­dác­tica expresamente señalada por el autor.

Within the framework of the bilingual edition of this hagiographic text (642 c.), we seek -with regard to its linguistic study- to establish the existence of characteristic features of the Byzantine period. Focusing on the lexical aspect, different words included in past centuries both in dictionaries and the TLG have been found in the text, as well as other words which are contemporary with the author and some that seem to be created by him. Emphasis is placed on the latter: whether they are neologisms or even hapax legomena. We conclude that the Bishop's statements are consistent with his own purpose: in the prologue, he states that he seeks to express himself «with a pedestrian nature, in an unadorned and humble manner as befits us, so that the "common and illiterate man" may also be helped by this work» (65 ff.) Even though there is some degree of false modesty, he does not lie in stating that he is addressing a wider audience. This is shown by other linguistic features, which confirm the use of a modern and creative language to draw the attention of the reader. Thus, the language contributes to the didactic intent expressly noted by the author.
