La posguerra y la palabra propia como respuesta

Abstract

The Holiday (1949) novela que cierra la trilogía de escrituras de guerra de la autora británica Stevie Smith, se trata de una obra escrita durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial pero publicada años después, instaurándose así dentro de una periodización compleja. Ante las experiencias de guerra numerosas autoras británicas entre las que se destacan Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Bowen e Inez Holden, han escrito novelas de guerra y de posguerra expresando diversas respuestas como sostiene Gill Plain en su artículo “Women Writers and the War” (2009). Así, en este trabajo analizaré la reacción singular que propone Stevie Smith en The Holiday a partir de la problematización lenguaje/guerra propuesta por Kate McLoughlin en su investigación “War and Words” (2009); ya que en una novela donde se evidencia la dificultad para encontrar las palabras que expresen el sentimiento de posguerra aparece una respuesta al gran interrogante a través del uso idiosincrático de la intertextualidad como marca del posmodernismo presente en la obra. Hay, en esta novela referencias a los propios poemas de Stevie Smith entre los que se usarán “The Castle, “Wretched Woman” para explicar el funcionamiento dentro de la trama como una respuesta ante el impacto de la guerra en el individuo.

A novel that closes the trilogy of war writings by the British author Stevie Smith, is a work written during the Second World War but published years later, thus establishing itself within a complex periodization. Faced with war experiences, numerous British authors, including Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Bowen and Inez Holden, have written war and post-war novels expressing diverse responses, as Gill Plain maintains in her article “Women Writers and the War” (2009). Thus, in this work I will analyze the unique reaction that Stevie Smith proposes in The Holiday based on the language/war problematization proposed by Kate McLoughlin in her research “War and Words” (2009); since in a novel where the difficulty in finding the words that express the postwar feeling is evident, an answer to the great question appears through the idiosyncratic use of intertextuality as a mark of the postmodernism present in the work. There are, in this novel, references to Stevie Smith´s own poems, among which “The Castle, “Wretched Woman” will be used to explain the functioning within the plot as a response to the impact of war on the individual.
