"Señor San Javiel... ruega por nojotro lo´j pogre": La fiesta patronal del 3 de diciembre en San Javier (Santa Fe, Argentina), un espacio de resignificación

Abstract

San Javier es una ciudad ubicada a orillas del río homónimo, en el norte de la provincia de Santa Fe, Argentina. Fundada en el siglo XVIII, surgió como una reducción jesuita que nucleaba a comunidades mocovíes. Durante dicho período se instauró la celebración de la fiesta patronal en honor a San Francisco Javier que continúa festejándose cada 3 de diciembre en la ciudad de San Javier. A lo largo del tiempo, el festejo ha sufrido transformaciones impulsadas por los distintos actores sociales. Dentro las características que ha adquirido dicho festejo, la procesión acuática enarbolada por el santo en compañía de una advocación de la Virgen María, es una de sus mayores particularidades. La fiesta constituye un espacio de resignificación donde los distintos participantes ponen en evidencia las diferentes realidades que conforman la ciudad y sus alrededores. En la apropiación de la figura del santo, tallada durante el período franciscano por artesanos mocovíes, se manifiesta la interacción conflictiva entre criollos e indígenas. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la fiesta popular religiosa en términos de un ritual donde se legitiman y se disputan espacios dentro de la comunidad. Por otro lado, nos interesa entender como la figura de San Francisco Javier condensa una multiplicidad de significados que definen distintas prácticas religiosas para los grupos intervinientes.

San Javier is a city located on the banks of the homonymous river, in the North of the province of Santa Fe, Argentina. Founded in the 18th century, it emerged as a Jesuit reduction to nuclear mocovíes communities. During this period was introduced the celebration of the feast in honor to Saint Francisco Javier who still celebrating every December 3 in the city of San Javier. Over time, the celebration has undergone transformations driven by the different social actors. Among the characteristics that it has acquired this celebration, the aquatic procession hoist by the Saint in the company of an advocation of the Virgin Mary, is one of their major features. The feast is an area of re-signifying where the participants highlight the different realities that make up the city and its surroundings. The appropriation of the figure of the Saint carved by craftsmen mocovíes during Franciscan period reveals the conflicting interaction between creoles and indigenous peoples. The aim of this paper is to analyze the popular religious festival in terms of a ritual where different actors legitimize and compete for spaces in the community. On the other hand, we want to understand how the figure of Saint Francisco Javier condenses a multiplicity of meanings that define different religious practices for participating groups.
