Asociacionismo e Integración: El caso del Club Sirio Libanés de Pergamino

Abstract

El presente trabajo rescata la historia de la asociación social-cultural-deportiva Club Sirio-libanés de Pergamino, como ejemplo del papel fundamental que tuvo la asociación étnica de los inmigrantes árabes de origen sirio-libanés en el proceso de reconstrucción identitaria para su integración en la sociedad argentina. Entender al asociacionismo como agente social de las colectividades inmigratorias, permitirá en este caso indagar hasta qué punto la conciencia de la diferencia étnica emergía no en el aislamiento comunitario, sino en la interacción con el afuera social del espacio público nacional. Para ello se propone un recorrido a través del tiempo, comenzando por una breve repaso del proceso migratorio sirio-libanés de fines de siglo XIX y principios de siglo XX, su llegada a la Argentina y la elección por parte de algunos de los integrantes de este colectivo de instalarse en la ciudad de Pergamino, ubicada al noroeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Luego, a través de la revisión de fuentes documentales locales, tales como publicaciones mensuales institucionales y revistas con motivo de distintos aniversarios del Club Sirio Libanés de Pergamino, además de revistas de interés general editadas en la misma ciudad, se dará cuenta de la importancia que representó esta institución como un mecanismo de “tramitación” de la identidad de estos primeros inmigrantes, ayudando a mantener y fortalecer los vínculos entre compatriotas. Sin embargo, podremos ver que la entidad nunca fue concebida como un ámbito cerrado o etnocéntrico, a modo de “enclave etnocultural”; por el contrario, desde sus inicios mantuvo una política de “apertura” a la comunidad en general, y de hecho ésta puede considerarse una de las razones por las cuales sobrevive hasta hoy en día como una importante institución social, cultural y deportiva local.

The present work recaps the history of the social, cultural and sports association “Club Sirio-libanés” (Syrian-Lebanese club) from Pergamino, as an example of the fundamental role that the ethnic association of Arab immigrants from Syria and Lebanon had in the identity resconstruction process for their integration in the Argentinean society. Understanding associationism as a social agent of immigratory communities will allow to inquire to which point the conscience of the ethnic difference arose not in the communitary isolation but in the interaction with the social exterior within the public space of the nation. To this mean, an analysis through time is proposed, beginning with a brief recapitulation of the Syrian-Lebanese migratory process at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, their arrival to Argentina and the election of some of the members of this collective of settling in the city of Pergamino, at the northwest of the province of Buenos Aires. Then, a revision of local documental sources such as institutional publications and magazines with the motive of the different anniversaries of the this association will point the importance of the Syrian-Lebanese club as a mechanism of “realization” of the identity of these first immigrants by helping to maintain and strengthen their link between their countrymen. Nevertheless, it can be observed that the association was never conceived as a closed or ethnocentric space that represented an “ethno-cultural enclave”. On the contrary, from its beginnings it maintained a policy of openness to the local community and, in fact, it can be considered as one of the main reasons for which it survives until today as an important social, cultural and sportive institutions of Pergamino.
