La política visual de la guerra del Chaco (1932-1935): apropiación territorial, construcción nacional y disputas de sentido a través del dispositivo fotográfico en Paraguay

Abstract

La guerra del Chaco (1932-1935) fue un conflicto político-militar en el que Bolivia y Paraguay se disputaron la soberanía sobre el Chaco boreal. En este artículo abordaremos la fotografía oficial del conflicto concomitada por el Comando en Jefe del ejército paraguayo para indagar en ellas la política y la voluntad narrativa construidas desde el Paraguay. El foco estará puesto en las consecuencias que la guerra tuvo hacia el interior de Paraguay, en cómo ella devino en una campaña de ocupación territorial ejecutada por las Fuerzas Armadas. El objetivo de este proceder radica en entender a la fotografía paraguaya de la guerra como una política visual que construyó una realidad chaqueña que permitió y mostro como necesario el ingreso al territorio en nombre de la soberanía nacional, el progreso y la modernización de la república. A estos fines, se analizarán las imágenes en función de lo que nos muestran, para reconstruir luego su densidad histórica. Asimismo, abordaremos el uso y circulación actual de las fotografías para indagar cómo median la memoria de la guerra al ser recuperadas desde el presente.

The Chaco War (1932-1935) was a political-military conflict in which Bolivia and Paraguay disputed their sovereignty over the Chaco boreal. In this article, in order to investigate the politics and war narrative constructed in Paraguay during the conflict, we analyze the official photography commissioned by the Paraguayan army’s Command-in-Chief. The focus will be on understanding the homeland consequences of the war for Paraguay, and how it became a campaign of territorial occupation carried out by the armed forces. The aim is to understand the Paraguayan war photography as a visual policy which constructed a Chaco reality that allowed and showed as necessary the entrance to the territory in the name of national sovereignty, progress and the modernization of the republic. To this end, the images will be analyzed in terms of what they show us, to reconstruct their historical density, later. We will also address the current use and circulation of the photographs in order to analyze how they mediate the memory of the war when they are recovered from the present.
