La tuberculosis y las artes de curar en Buenos Aires (c. 1870-1900)

Abstract

La tuberculosis se transformó a fines del siglo XIX en una patología extendida y con altos índices de mortalidad en Buenos Aires. Los médicos y las agencias estatales de sanidad se implicaron desde el inicio en las tareas relacionadas con su detección, prevención y tratamiento. El objetivo es analizar la diversidad de ofertas curativas disponibles durante las últimas tres décadas de esa centuria. En momentos en que la biomedicina se mostraba incapaz de remediar esa afección, los tuberculosos hicieron uso de otras alternativas, que iban desde la sanación no diplomada hasta la medicina casera.

As in many cities around the world, tuberculosis became a widespread pathology with high mortality rates in Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. Physicians and state health agencies were involved from the beginning in the tasks related to its detection, prevention and treatment. e aim of this paper is to analyze the diversity of curative offers available during the last three decades of that century. At times when biomedicine proved incapable of remedying this condition, tuberculosis sufferers made use of other alternatives, ranging from non-medical healing to home medicine.
