La era del canon: Canción popular y memoria colectiva en el siglo XXI

Abstract

Este artículo comparte reflexiones sobre el pasado de la música popular y su vigencia en el siglo XXI a través de la forma de un canon o lista de canciones consideradas “clássicas”. Sin restringir el concepto de canon a una lista cerrada o fija, el autor se pregunta sobre aquellas canciones que han permanecido en el tiempo superando una especie de “selección natural”. ¿A través de qué procesos de comunicación y legitimación cultural gozan hoy estos “temas” del estatus de “clássicos”, cuando en otros tiempos lo “clássico” se restringía a la llamada música "seria" o “académica”? Si bien la mayoría de los ejemplos analizados provienen del inventario de música popular argentina, el artículo incluye extensas observaciones sobre las tradiciones cancionistas de otros países.

This article shares reflections on the past of popular music and its validity in the twenty-first century through the form of a canon or list of songs considered “classical”. Without restricting the concept of canon to a closed or fixed list, the author asks about those songs that have remained in time overcoming a kind of “natural selection”. Through what processes of communication and cultural legitimation do these “themes” enjoy today the status of “classical”, when in other times the “classical” was restricted to the so-called “serious" or “academic” music? While most of the examples analyzed come from the inventory of Argentine popular music, the article includes extensive observations on the songmaking traditions of other countries.
