This systematic review was conducted with reference to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) (Moher et al., 2015). The working protocol was carried out in five steps: search strategy, study selection, outcome variable, information extraction, and statistical analysis. Search strategy The search for scientific papers was carried out without date or language restrictions, by key words in PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Scielo, and Academic Google databases. Keywords used, in different combinations, were “S. aureus”,“antimicrobial”,“susceptibility”,“resistance”,“bovine”,and “mastitis”. Eligibility and relevance of the articles based on their abstracts and titles were analyzed in compliance with the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Study selection The first group of eligible articles was selected by two researchers, independently. Any disagreement was resolved by consensus. The scientific articles included in this meta-analysis were selected based on the following criteria: observational studies and published in peer-reviewed journals. Only S. aureus originated from the bovine quarter or composite milk were included. Studies must have reported the total number of S. aureus isolates examined (population) and the number of them that was resistant to selected antimicrobials. When one article showed results from different countries, sample time, methodology or different years of sampling, each condition was considered as one independent study. Then, one scientific article could include several studies. Reviews, duplicated reports, information of milk from a different species, articles without a peer review system (such as a thesis or editorial notes) were excluded. For analytical purposes, Latin America, which is a cultural/linguistic division of the Americas, was considered as a continent.
