La emergencia de las identidades travestis en Argentina

Abstract

La investigación reconstruye las condiciones de emergencia de los modos de vida travestis entre las décadas de 1950 y 1980. La hipótesis principal será que tanto lo travesti como lo gay son producciones contemporáneas que tuvieron su génesis en las culturas maricas de antaño a través de un proceso de diferenciación mutua. Este proceso requirió como condición de posibilidad la escisión de la identidad sexual y de la identidad de género —antes indisociablemente imbricadas— como dos dimensiones independientes y autónomas. El trabajo recorrerá las transformaciones en la sexualidad y en los usos del género de maricas y travestis. Se analizará como la incorporación de saberes y prácticas sobre la manipulación del cuerpo y la impostación de la feminidad en carnavales y cabarets abrieron un espacio de posibilidad para la emergencia de la experiencia travesti contemporánea. Sostendré que el surgimiento de lo travesti es paralelo a la emergencia de las identidades gais a partir de un proceso simultáneo de diferenciación transfóbico que requirió la negación y el repudio de las travestis por parte de estos últimos. La investigación se basa en el análisis historiográfico de un corpus diverso de materiales culturales, hemerográficos y testimoniales.

This research reconstructs the conditions of emergence of travestis’ lifestyles between the 1950s and 1980s. The main hypothesis will be that both gays and travestis are contemporary productions that emerged in the marica cultures of the past through a process of mutual differentiation. This process required, as a condition of possibility, the separation of sexual identity and gender identity —previously inseparably intertwined— as two independent and autonomous dimensions. The work will examine the transformations in the sexuality and usage of gender of maricas, gays, and travestis. It will analyze how the incorporation of knowledge and practices related to the manipulation of the body and the imposition of femininity in carnivals and cabarets opened a space of possibility for the emergence of the contemporary travesti experience. I will argue that the emergence of travestis is parallel to the emergence of gay identities from a simultaneous process of transphobic differentiation that requires the denial and repudiation of travestis by the latter. The research is based on the historiographical analysis of a diverse corpus of cultural, newspaper, and testimonial materials
