Nature and Resources in the Process of Foundation of the Agricultural Colonies of Santa Fe

Abstract

El artículo se propone realizar una primera aproximación desde la historia ambiental a un aspecto del proceso de implementación de las colonias agrícolas santafesinas iniciado en la década de 1850. En primer lugar, se intenta relevar la caracterización realizada por los algunos autores contemporáneos, viajeros pero también empresarios, agentes gubernamentales e intelectuales que impulsaban la política de colonización, a partir de su concepción del medio ambiente y los recursos naturales y las posibles transformaciones paisajísticas que se plantearon en consecuencia. Asimismo, se revisa literatura de la época en búsqueda de definiciones y análisis sobre tres recursos fundamentales: el suelo, la vegetación nativa y el agua, poniendo atención también en las intervenciones que los distintos actores involucrados en el proyecto colonizador realizaron sobre cada uno de ellos para llevar a buen término su empresa. Se analizan también las distintas propuestas de zonificación productiva que derivarían de los paisajes previamente existentes (praderas, bañados, bosques, etc.) y hasta de qué modo se transformarían para adaptarlos a los requerimientos del mercado mundial.

The article intends to make a first approximation from environmental history to an aspect of the implementation process of the Santa Fe agricultural colonies that began in the 1850s. Firstly, it tries to reveal the characterization made by some contemporary authors, travelers but also businessmen, government agents and intellectuals who promoted the colonization policy, based on their conception of the environment and natural resources and the possible landscape transformations that were raised as a result. Likewise, literature of the time is reviewed in search of definitions and analysis of three fundamental resources: soil, native vegetation and water, also paying attention to the interventions that the different actors involved in the colonizing project carried out on each one of them to bring your business to fruition. The different proposals for productive zoning that would derive from previously existing landscapes (meadows, marshes, forests, etc.) and even how they would be transformed to adapt them to the requirements of the world market are also analyzed.
