Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), now replaced with the term metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), was initially coined in 1980 to denote a condition exhibiting the histological traits of alcohol-associated liver disease in individuals who neither consume alcohol nor have any other liver disease of clinical importance.
