La estigmatización en salud mental y su relación con la necesidad de cierre cognitivo (NCC)

Abstract

Existe una gran variedad de factores que influyen en las creencias de las personas acerca de la salud y enfermedad mental, las cuales pueden adquirir un carácter estigmatizante. El objetivo de este estudio es indagar la relación entre el estigma hacia la salud mental y la necesidad de cierre cognitivo, definida como la tendencia de buscar certeza epistémica para evitar la incertidumbre. Además, se analizó la interacción de estas variables con la cercanía a personas con diagnóstico de enfermedad mental. Materiales y método: se realizó un estudio correlacional en una muestra de 409 adultos residentes en Argentina, durante el segundo semestre del año 2021. Para ello se utilizó un cuestionario sociodemográfico, una adaptación al idioma español de la Escala de estigmatización de la enfermedad mental de Day y el Test revisado de necesidad de cierre cognitivo. Resultados: tal como se hipotetizó, distintos aspectos del estigma se asociaron con la necesidad de cierre cognitivo, y las personas con allegados diagnosticados mostraron mejores opiniones sobre el vínculo con dichas personas. Sin embargo, aquellas que puntuaron alto en necesidad de cierre cognitivo mostraron peores opiniones aun teniendo un conocido con enfermedad mental. Se concluye que la necesidad de cierre cognitivo es un elemento relevante al momento de considerar los factores que modulan la estigmatización hacia personas con trastornos mentales.

There is a wide variety of factors that influence people's beliefs about mental health and illness, which can acquire a stigmatizing nature. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between mental health stigma and the need for cognitive closure, defined as the tendency to seek epistemic certainty to avoid uncertainty. Additionally, the interaction of these variables with proximity to people with a diagnosis of mental illness was analyzed. Materials and method: a correlational study was carried out on a sample of 409 adults residing in Argentina, during the second half of 2021. For this, a sociodemographic questionnaire was used, an adaptation to the Spanish language of the Mental Illness Stigmatization Scale of Day and the revised Need for Cognitive Closure Test. Results: As hypothesized, different aspects of stigma were associated with the need for cognitive closure, and people with diagnosed loved ones showed better opinions about the bond with said people. However, those who scored high in need for cognitive closure showed worse opinions even if they had an acquaintance with mental illness. It is concluded that the need for cognitive closure is a relevant element when considering the factors that modulate stigmatization towards people with mental disorders.
