dc.description.abstract

In the same decade in which Freddy published her first and only vinyl, an avant-garde and experimental event took place in Jamaica that would give birth to dub thanks to King Tubby. If Freddy broke the cables, King Tubby fixed them in the back room of his electricity store, generating one of the first sound systems in Jaimaica. While for Freddy the voice was the machine, King Tubby opted to delete the vocals to focus on the rhythm, with a preference for bass and percussive instruments. In their own way, both Freddy and King Tubby plot unusual arrangements between voice and machine that, although they may seem opposite, come together in that both, based on precariousness, interfere with the musical device, establishing lines of flight, in succession (as says that a nylon stocking runs) that re-aurate the artistic practice.
