Transformistas en escena: Género y trabajo en el teatro de variedades, Buenos Aires, ca. 1910

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es examinar algunos sentidos contemporáneos asignados a la práctica del travestismo femenino en el teatro de variedades en Buenos Aires a comienzos del siglo XX. Al tomarlas como resultado de múltiples intencionalidades que se vuelcan en momentos únicos e irrepetibles de interacción en el escenario, este texto se propone observar las actuaciones de los artistas transformistas a la luz de contextos cambiantes. A través de la prensa que circulaba en distintas ciudades de un circuito atlántico de entretenimientos y de registros fotográficos diversos, enfoca las conexiones entre las performances de los llamados transformistas profesionales o imitadores de estrellas con otras prácticas de travestismo afuera del escenario; indaga sobre los guiones de feminidad que inspiraban estas actuaciones; y, principalmente, acompaña la trayectoria de algunos artistas. Sostiene que los viajes y las relaciones laborales que establecían con los dueños de teatros eran parte crucial de su experiencia social y de los sentidos contemporáneos del travestismo.

The purpose of this article is to examine the practice of transvestism and its meanings in the variety theater in Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century. By considering this particular theatrical performance as unrepeatable moments of interaction on stage, this text observes the performances of transformist artists in the light of changing contexts. Through the press that circulated in different cities of an Atlantic entertainment circuit and diverse photographic records, it focuses on the connections between the performances of the so-called professional transformistas or star imitators with other transvestism practices offstage; investigates the scripts of femininity that inspired these performances; and mainly, it tracks the trajectory of some artists. It argues that their itinerance and the work relations they establish with theater owners were a crucial part of their social experience and the contemporary meanings of cross-dressing
