Apuntes de lectura sobre lingüística americana

Abstract

La historia de la lingüística del siglo XIX, contrariamente a lo que una revisión poco cuidada de los manuales de la disciplina nos enseña, es bastante compleja e intrincada. La tradicional división por etapas y/o escuelas (comparativismo e historicismo, románticos, neogramáticos, positivistas, etc.) muchas veces es replicada acríticamente y sin una lectura detenida de las fuentes. En esa historia tampoco entra en consideración el estudio de las lenguas indígenas en América y mucho menos los desarrollos de la lingüística en nuestro continente. Poco se sabe tampoco sobre lo que se escribió en Argentina antes de 1900, ni cuál era la circulación del conocimiento y la información. En este trabajo, presentamos un esbozo para una lectura matizada de algunos autores de la lingüística dominante en relación con las teorías generales sobre el lenguaje, el origen de las lenguas y las lenguas indígenas. Esta mirada, a modo de apuntes de lectura, parte de la Biblioteca Americana de Bartolomé Mitre: qué libros leyó, cómo circularon, qué dicen esos autores sobre las lenguas indígenas, cómo las analizan. Para esto, sostenemos que la figura de este intelectual operó como nodo significativo en el entramado del círculo americanista del último cuarto de siglo XIX en Argentina.

The history of linguistics in the 19th century, contrary to what a quick reading of manuals of the discipline teaches us, is quite complex and intricate. The traditional division by stages and/or schools (comparative and historical linguistics, romanticism, Neogrammarians, positivism, etc.) is often replicated uncritically and without a careful reading of the sources. Neither does the study of indigenous languages in America enter into consideration in that history, much less the developments of linguistics in our continent. Little is also known about what was written in Argentina before 1900, nor what was the circulation of knowledge and information. In this work, we present an outline for a nuanced reading of some authors of the dominant linguistics in relation to general theories about language, the origin of languages and indigenous languages. That look, by way of reading notes, starts from the American Library of Bartolomé Mitre: what books did he read, how did they circulate, what do these authors say about indigenous languages, how do they analyze them. For this, we maintain that the figure of this intellectual operated as a significant node in the framework of the Americanist circle of the last quarter of the 19th century in Argentina.
