Notas etnográficas sobre la factura de imágenes religiosas en la Puna de Jujuy, Argentina

Abstract

La imaginería religiosa de la región Puna de la Provincia de Jujuy, enArgentina, ha sido objeto de estudios artísticos y científicos de diverso tipo.Este artículo tiene por objetivo presentar la red de agencias involucrada desu manufactura a partir de la presentación en profundidad de un caso etnográfico.Aquí relato cómo una imagen de San Santiago fue encargada a unartesano local por un colectivo católico laico y luego integrada a la vida religiosade la parroquia. Recupero, también, cómo este hombre describió suexperiencia con la técnica escultórica y con su participación en la creaciónespecífica de este santo. Los resultados indican que diversos agentes religiososy laicos actuaron en diferentes escalas para intervenir en la materialidadde la imagen, con especial atención en cómo podría adaptar su historia a lascaracterísticas estéticas y morales entendidas como locales. Finalizo el textocon una reflexión general sobre cómo el pasado y el presente se imbricaronen este caso, lo que posibilitó otro modo de discutir la noción de patrimonio.

Scientific and artistic studies have highlighted some important aspects of the religious imagery among the peasant and indigenous populations of the Highlands of Jujuy (Argentina). This paper aims to show the complex network of human and non-human agencies involved in the craft making of one new figure of San Santiago (St. James) by charge of a native secular group. By presenting an intensive ethnographic case, I will try to reconstruct its brief history in three steps. First, we will consider the commission of the work and the artisan’s narrative of his own artistic and religious education. Then, this texts focus on the events that have been displayed to incorporate this image into the local catholic life. Finally, the artisan’s experience on risks and pain due to his intervention on the saint’s body will be taken on consideration. Results shows that different religious and non-religious agents acted up manipulating the materiality of Santiago, underlining the historical adaptation to the understood esthetical and moral diacritics of the local. The paper ends with a general reflexion on the modes of past-present imbrication, attending to this ethnographic case but looking forward at the approach on patrimonial materials on peasant and indigenous contexts.
