La reforma de la Iglesia y sus enemigos: demonios y malos pastores en las obras de Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco (1495-1556)

Abstract

La idea de reforma atraviesa toda la historia de la Iglesia. El demonio, a su vez, es uno de los elementos fundamentales del cristianismo. El presente artículo indaga las relaciones entre reforma de la Iglesia y presencia del demonio en las obras del doctor en cánones y obispo Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco (1495-1556). Destaca la representación del demonio como interventor en la actividad pastoral de curas y prelados para lograr la condena de la mayor cantidad de almas. Para este fin, Díaz de Luco consideraba que los demonios promovían “errores” de distinto tipo como supersticiones y la brujería, así como diferentes faltas entre los clérigos. Se propone así la existencia de una “economía de la tentación” por parte del diablo y sus agentes con el fin de colocar obstáculos a las actitudes reformistas en la Iglesia del siglo XVI.

The idea of reform goes through the whole history of the Church. The Devil, in turn, is one of the fundamental elements of the Christianism. This paper looks into the relationships between reform of the Church and the presence of the Devil in the works of the Doctor of Canon Law and bishop Juan Bernal de Díaz de Luco (1495-1556). The article points out the representation of Sathan interfering with the pastoral activity of priest and prelates to get the condemnation of the highest number of souls. To this end, Díaz de Luco considered that demons promoted “errors” of different kind as superstitions and witchcraft, and distinct offenses among the clerics. Then, it is here proposed the existence of an “economy of temptation” made by the Devil and its agents to put obstacles to the reform impulses in sixteenth-century Church.
