Monumentalismo y relato: la tensión narrativa en Austerlitz de W. G. Sebald

Abstract

En Austerlitz, la última novela de W. G. Sebald, existe una dinámica de los espacios que se proyecta hacia las formas de pensar –y cuestionar– la construcción del relato. El texto, cuyo núcleo narrativo central es la historia de Jacques Austerlitz, posee numerosas digresiones y excursos sobre historia de la arquitectura, en las que el personaje critica el monumentalismo de la era capitalista: allí se concreta un ocultamiento de la verdad que solo podrá terminarse cuando restituyamos las pequeñas unidades. De la misma manera, la narración articula impulsos antinarrativos –entrecruzamiento de voces, crisis lingüísticas, imágenes que el personaje no puede identificar– que socavan el grand récit épico y moldean un relato frágil, cuya principal fuerza es la declaración de su propia impotencia.

In Austerlitz, the last novel by W. G. Sebald, there is a dynamic of spaces that projects itself into the ways of thinking – and questioning – the construction of the story. The text, whose central narrative core is the story of Jacques Austerlitz, has numerous digressions and excurses on the history of architecture, in which the character criticizes the monumentalism of the capitalist era: a concealment of the truth that can only come to an end when we restore the small units. In the same way, the narrative articulates anti-narrative impulses (interweaving of voices, linguistic crises, images that the character cannot identify) that undermine the epic grand récit and shape a fragile tale, whose main strength is the declaration of its own impotence.
