BCG o Friedmann. Vacunas contra la tuberculosis en época de incertidumbre: Argentina década de 1930

Abstract

Durante la década de 1930 y principios de la de 1940varias vacunas que pretendían combatir la tuberculosis fueron parte de la agenda médica e institucional. Se trataba de desarrollos científicos europeos y en menor medida asiáticos y criollos. Sin embargo en la arena científica argentina sólo dos formaron parte de esfuerzos de médicos, políticos e instituciones para imponerlas: BCG y Friedmann. Esta competencia se cristalizó en discusiones acerca de la capacidad de cada una para combatir la tuberculosis. Esas disputas se dieron en el ámbito académico y a nivel político estatal. En este artículo pretendemos analizar las estrategias que se llevaron adelante por parte de los promotores de dos vacunas que fueron contemporáneas. A través de publicaciones médicas en tesis, revistas, libros y documentación estatal analizaremos las estrategias que se generaron en términos de la discusión y los esfuerzos por imponerlas en el Estado en sus diversos niveles en la elite médica y en la sociedad.

During the 1930s and early 1940s, various vaccines intended to combat tuberculosis were part of the medical and institutional agenda. These were European -and to a lesser extent Asian and local- scientific developments. However, in the Argentine scientific arena, only two were part of efforts by doctors, politicians and institutions to impose them: BCG and Friedmann. This competition crystallized in discussions about the capacity of each one to fight tuberculosis. These disputes occurred in the academic sphere and at the state political level. In this article we intend to analyze the strategies that were carried out by the promoters of these two contemporary vaccines. Through medical publications in theses, magazines, books and state documentation, we will analyze the strategies that were generated in terms of the discussion and the efforts to impose them on the State at its various levels in the medical elite and in society.
