Estudio arqueológico distribucional y documental del Fortín Machado (1858-1870', Tres Arroyos, Buenos Aires)

Abstract

El estudio de fuertes y fortines de la frontera Sur y Costa Sur tiene larga data dentro de la arqueología histórica bonaerense aportando una mirada novedosa, crítica e integradora desde diversas fuentes de información. En este trabajo, se presentan el análisis e interpretación de los primeros resultados de los trabajos de campo y de archivo desarrollados en torno al fortín Machado. Las prospecciones arqueológicas realizadas en dos sectores del sitio implicaron la recolección superficial de materiales y la realización de sondeos. Los datos obtenidos se procesaron en un SIG y se aplicaron test estadísticos para comprender las distribuciones espaciales y asociaciones entre los hallazgos arqueológicos. Se estimaron los procesos y agentes naturales y culturales que afectaron la historia de vida del sitio. A su vez, estos resultados se compararon con otros seis fortines coetáneos. Por último, se integraron los datos históricos provenientes de fuentes documentales y gráficas relevadas en distintos repositorios. Este primer acercamiento a las características generales y posibles áreas de actividades dentro del asentamiento indicaría la presencia de un poblado de mayor envergadura y con estructuras de diversa funcionalidad (montículo y foso, corral, ranchos de la tropa y familia, pulpería, cementerio) y ocupado por más de una década (1858-1870).

The study of forts and fortlets of the Southern and Southern Coastal Frontier has a long development within the historical archaeology of the Province of Buenos Aires, contributing new, critical and integrating views of different sources of information. This paper presents the analysis and interpretation of the first results of the field and archival work performed around the Machado fortlet. The archaeological prospecting carried out in two sectors of the site involved the superficial collection of materials and the surveying of the site. The data obtained was processed with SIG and statistical test to understand the spatial distributions and the associations between the archaeological findings. The natural and cultural processes and agents that affected the life history of the site were assessed. In addition, these results were compared with six other contemporary fortlets. Finally, historical data from relevant documentary and graphic sources in different repositories were integrated. This first approach to the general characteristics and possible areas of activity within the settlement would indicate presence of a larger settlement with structures of diverse functionality (tell and moat, corral, troop house, pulpería, cemetery) occupied for more than a decade (1858-1870).
