Individuo como cosa singular: Los dos sentidos de acción en la Ética de Spinoza

Abstract

RESUMEN: Spinoza identifica reiteradas veces en la Ética las nociones de individuo y cosa singular. De este modo, el presente artículo se propone, en primer lugar, analizar la noción de cosa singular y acción junto con la equiparación que realiza Spinoza entre la primera y la noción de individuo. En segundo lugar, indagar qué aporta esta equiparación a la noción de individuo, la cual usualmente es estudiada en tanto relación y conatus. La hipótesis que me interesa defender es que, por un lado, tanto la cosa singular como la acción pueden entenderse en un sentido amplio y en uno restringido; y, por otro, que comprender al individuo como cosa singular acentúa un aspecto crucial de ellos: su acción y operación.

Spinoza identifies the notions of individual and singular thing multiple times in Ethics. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze, firstly, the notions of singular thing and action, as well as the equation established by Spinoza between the former and the notion of individual. Secondly, it seeks to investigate the contribution of this equation to the notion of individual, which is often analyzed in terms of relation and conatus. The hypothesis that I aim to prove is twofold. On one hand, both the singular thing and action can be understood in both broad and restricted senses. On the other hand, understanding individuals as singular things highlights a crucial aspect of them, namely, their action and operation.
