Viejos y nuevos “otros” en la polémica sobre la licitud moral del teatro: el Antiteatro de Esteban Manuel Villegas (1646-1649)

Abstract

Las revueltas y rebeliones que conmocionaron a la Monarquía Hispánica durante la década de 1640 implicaron una amenaza tanto para su hegemonía política en Europa, como para la continuidad de la unidad dinástica de los reinos peninsulares. En este contexto se produjo una nueva y más prolongada suspensión de la actividad teatral propiciada por quienes veían en el teatro público una amenaza para la supervivencia del reino. Este trabajo aborda la construcción de distintas figuras de la alteridad en el Antiteatro de Esteban Manuel de Villegas, una de las intervenciones antiteatrales más singulares del período. En particular, se analizan tanto la función retórica de esas otredades en el discurso de Villegas, como la continuidad o innovación que implica la apelación a dichas alteridades respecto al arsenal argumentativo acopiado por los enemigos del teatro áureo.

The revolts and rebellions that affected the Hispanic Monarchy during the 1640s implied a threat both to its political hegemony in Europe and to the very continuity of the dynastic unity of the peninsular kingdoms. In this context, a new and longer suspension of theatrical activity occurred, fostered by those who saw public theatre as a menace to the survival of the kingdom. This article deals with the construction of different figures of otherness in Esteban Manuel de Villegas’ Antiteatro, one of the most singular antitheatrical discourse of the period. We focus on the rhetorical function of these figures in Villegas’ discourse, as well as on the continuity or innovation that the appeal to these alterities implies with respect to the argumentative arsenal gathered by the enemies of Golden Age theatre.
