In recent years, alterations to the Earth's climate system have intensi!ed, with increasingly serious and irreversible consequences for ecosystems and the people who live on Earth. The problem of global warming, caused mainly by the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, is forcing us to rethink the way we inhabit our planet. It is imminent to promote actions that allow a transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources. Part of the solution lies not only in the diversi!cation of the energy matrix of countries, but also in the sustainable use of available resources. In addition to the energy provided by the sun, water, wind and biomass, there is a less widespread type of energy known as "geothermal energy". This type of resource that is born in the interior of the Earth is susceptible of being used as heat or for the generation of electric energy and can be found practically all over the world. Argentina is no stranger to this; it is estimated that the country has a potential of 490 to 2,010 MWe of electricity generation of geothermal origin (Gawell et al., 1999; Chiodi, et al., 2020). This work describes geothermal energy in general, with a brief historical review of its evolution, current state, challenges and opportunities for its development in Argentina.
