Sarmiento y la cuestión religiosa como factor explicativo de la Guerra del Paraguay

Abstract

La Guerra del Paraguay fue un conflicto meritorio de diversos estudios encarados desde disímiles ópticas, como la política, cultural, económica, etc. Asimismo, dentro de la historiografía argentina existen corrientes –entre estas, la liberal, la revisionista o la nueva historia política– interesadas en indagar y poner énfasis en distintas causas explicativas. El presente estudio, partiendo de dichos legados investigativos, procura sumar elementos al conocimiento de la mentada contienda que enfrentó a los países de Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay contra Paraguay. Para ello se indagará la interpretación de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento quien, al momento de estallar la disputa, se hallaba en Estados Unidos cumpliendo labores diplomáticas. Específicamente nuestro interés está centrado en mostrar cómo el sanjuanino encontró en factores religiosos los motivos desencadenantes del altercado bélico desarrollado entre 1864 y 1870.

The Paraguayan War was a conflict that deserves various studies from different perspectives, such as political, cultural, economic, etc. Likewise, within Argentine historiography there are currents –among these, the liberal, the revisionist or the new political history– interested in investigating and emphasizing different explanatory causes. The present study, based on these investigative legacies, seeks to add elements to the knowledge of the aforementioned contest that pitted the countries of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay against Paraguay. For this, the interpretation of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento will be investigated, who, at the time the dispute broke out, was in the United States doing diplomatic work. Specifically, our interest is focused on showing how the San Juan’s found in religious factors the triggering motives of the warlike altercation developed between 1864 and 1870.
