Lo materno en el Ms. Esc. K-III-4 (Libro de Apolonio, Vida de Santa María Egipciaca, Libro de los tres reyes de Oriente)

Abstract

En el presente trabajo, se aborda el tema de la maternidad medieval y su función social en los textos que integran el códice K-III-4 de la Biblioteca de San Lorenzo de El Escorial. El Libro de Apolonio, la Vida de Santa María Egipciaca y el Libro de los tres reyes de Oriente, a pesar de que pertenecen a tradiciones poéticas diferentes y formas estróficas diversas, presentan numerosos elementos y temáticas comunes que permiten distinguir al manuscrito, en su conjunto, como objeto cultural unitario. Particularmente a partir de la ausencia materna y la problematización más amplia de lo femenino en cada una de las historias, se indaga en las formas textuales que median o suplen esa carencia y su importancia en la preservación del orden social.

This paper focuses on the issue of medieval motherhood and its social function in the texts that make up the codex K-III-4 of the San Lorenzo de El Escorial Library. The Book of Apollonius, The Lfe of Saint Maria Aegyptiaca, and the Book of the Three Kings of Orient, although they belong to different poetic traditions and diverse strophic forms, share numerous elements and themes that support the analysis of the manuscript as a single cultural object. Taking the absence, lack of, or indifference towards motherhood and the broader problematization of the feminine in the stories as a starting point, the analysis focuses on the ways in which the texts mediate or make up for this absence, and their importance in the preservation of the social order.
