“El pueblo aclamó al héroe de Malvinas”: Crónica y la cobertura del vuelo de Miguel Fitz Gerald (1964)

Abstract

En 1964, mientras el Subcomité III de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas se encontraba trabajando sobre la disputa británico-argentina por Malvinas, el piloto Miguel Fitz Gerald voló a las islas para visibilizar el reclamo soberano argentino. Con el objetivo de evitar sanciones, el piloto buscó el apoyo de los medios de comunicación, motivo por el cual estableció un acuerdo con Héctor R. García, dueño de Crónica, gracias al cual este diario de carácter sensacionalista se garantizó la cobertura exclusiva del hecho. En el presente artículo analizamos, considerando aspectos cuantitativos y cualitativos, el abordaje periodístico que Crónica realizó de este acontecimiento y de sus consecuencias, con especial atención en las diferentes estrategias que desarrolló a lo largo de la cobertura. La hipótesis de la cual partimos afirma que, en cuanto actor político, Crónica realizó un tratamiento informativo orientado a cumplir con el acuerdo García-Fitz Gerald y tendiente a lograr el apoyo de la opinión pública.

In 1964, while the Subcommittee III of the United Nations was working on the British-Argentine dispute over the Malvinas Islands, pilot Miguel Fitz Gerald flew to those islands to make the Argentine sovereign claim visible. In order to avoid sanctions, the pilot tried to get the support of the media, so he established an agreement with Héctor R. García, owner of Crónica, and then this “yellow” newspaper guaranteed itself the exclusive coverage of the event. In this article, we’ll consider quantitative and qualitative aspects in order to analyze Crónica’s journalistic approach to this event and its consequences, focusing on the different strategies developed throughout the coverage. Our hypothesis is that, as a political actor, Crónica carried out an informative treatment to fulfill the agreement García-Fitz Gerald, aimed at obtaining the public opinion’s support.
