La Garza Encapuchada (Nyctanassa violacea), una nueva especie para Argentina

Abstract

La Garza Encapuchada (Nyctanassa violacea) está ampliamente distribuida en el continente americano. Actualmente se encuentra en rápida expansión hacia el sur de Sudamérica sobre las costas del océano Pacífico, y cuenta con registros regulares en el norte de Chile desde el año 2009. Sin embargo, aún no contaba con citas para la Argentina. Aquí presento el primer registro documentado de la Garza Encapuchada en Argentina, en base a una observación efectuada en Tilcara, Jujuy, el día 22 de octubre de 2018. La presencia de la especie en el país pudo verse favorecida por el proceso de expansión y a su comportamiento divagante –evidenciado por múltiples registros lejanos a su área de distribución regular–. Si el proceso de expansión se continúa en el tiem­po, y el número de observadores de aves continúa creciendo, es esperable que se produzcan nuevos registros de la Garza Encapuchada en nuestro país, lo cual permitirá arrojar más luz sobre su status regional.

The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is widely distributed in the Americas. It is rapidly expanding southwards on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and has been regularly seen in northern Chile since 2009. However, it has never been reported in Argentina. Here, I present the first documented record of the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron for Argentina, based on an observation made in Tilcara, Jujuy, on October 22, 2018. The presence of this species in the country may have been facilitated by the ongoing expansion and its vagrant behavior –evidenced by multiple sightings far from its regular range. If the process of expansion conti­nues over time and the number of birders continues to grow, new records of the Yellow-crowned Heron should occur and will shed more light on its regional status.
