Cartas desde la frontera colonial del sur: Entre los datos y los formatos

Abstract

El formato de los documentos de archivo suele considerarse una cuestión externa a sus contenidos. Sin embargo, sostenemos que al poner en evidencia las formas de recolección de información por parte de los funcionarios coloniales pueden alertar sobre la calidad de los datos. Reflexionamos aquí sobre las posibles distorsiones que el carácter normalizado de cartas, borradores, minutas y otros papeles imprime en nuestra búsqueda etnográfica, ala vez que nos advierte sobre las prácticas burocráticas y coercitivas de los agentes del estado colonial.

The format of the archive documents is often regarded as an issue that is external with respect to its content. However, we argue that by bringing to light the forms of information collection applied by colonial officials, these formats can alert on the quality of those data. In this article, we reflect upon the possible distortions that the standardized character of letters, drafts, minutes and other papers imprints on our ethnographic research, while at the same time it warns us about the bureaucratic and coercive practices of the agents of the colonial state.
