Aventura, colonización y expansión capitalista: Producción visual y textual en tres expediciones al Gran Chaco

Abstract

Las distintas porciones del Gran Chaco fueron incorporadas tardíamente a los respectivos estados nacionales y por lo tanto, al sistema capitalista. Este texto analiza las relaciones entre viaje, aventura y producción de una mirada colonizadora de la región a partir de las producciones visuales y textuales producidas por tres experiencias: el viaje al Río Bermejo (ca. 1915) que derivó en un travelogue con ese título, realizado por Max Glucksmann; la expedición Haeger (1920) que produjo en particular un film en 1922, reversionado en 1950; y la expedición Montt & Fialho (1924), de la que abordaremos un álbum fotográfico que incluye un diario de viaje. El análisis de estos materiales busca sopesar el discurso aventurero o técnico con la mirada sobre la ocupación y explotación del territorio en el entramado entre visualidad y textualidad. Se distingue la matriz colonialista de los discursos y prácticas de un interés colonizador vinculado a la creación de colonias o explotaciones territoriales. Por consiguiente, se atiende a ciertos tópicos: los modos de acceso al territorio y la construcción de cartografías visuales o simbólicas; los medios de transporte e infraestructura; la generación de colonias agrícolas y disponibilidad de mano de obra en estos nuevos espacios de la expansión capitalista; la imagen racializada que estas experiencias de viaje delinearon sobre la población indígena, como parte del entramado colonialista y colonizador.

The different portions of the Gran Chaco were belatedly incorporated into the respective national states and therefore, into the capitalist system. This paper analyses the relationship between travel, adventure, and the colonizing gaze of the region. The visual and textual sources we examine were produced by three travel experiences: Viaje al Río Bermejo (Trip to Bermejo River) (approx. 1915) which resulted in a travelogue with the same title, made by Max Glücksmann; Haeger Expedition (1920) which produced among other sources, a # lm in 1922, reversed in 1950; and the Montt & Fialho Expedition (1924), with a photographic album that includes a travel diary, we address. The analysis of these materials aims to ponder the adventurous or technical discourse with a gaze on the occupation and exploitation of the territory. The colonialist matrix is distinguished from the discourses and practices of a colonizing interest linked to the creation of colonies or territorial exploitations. Consequently, the main issues addressed in this paper are the modes of access to the territory and the construction of visual or symbolic cartographies; the roles of transport and infrastructure; the generation of agricultural colonies, and the availability of labour in these new spaces of capitalist expansion; the racialized image constructed on the indigenous population, which claims the colonialist and colonizing structure.
