Misión, poder y desencanto: la "Carta al emperador Carlos V" de fray Toribio de Benavente Motolinía (1555)

Abstract

La "Carta al Emperador Carlos V" ha sido motivo de abordajes críticos dado el ataque del enunciador a De las Casas y su defensa del trabajo franciscano novohispano. No obstante, no es esta la primera carta escrita por Motolinía, ni la única de este tenor: otras epístolas por él firmadas reflejan las disputas entre órdenes y el tenso contexto político de la evangelización. En este artículo analizo las características que hacen de esta carta un texto en el que se cruzan la acusación, la defensa y recursos de las crónicas misioneras novohispanas y la epístola franciscana más atendida de la conquista.

The “Carta al Emperador Carlos V” has been studied by scholars given the attack of the enunciator to De las Casas and his defense of the Franciscan work. Nevertheless, this is not the first letter written by Motolinía and it is not the only one in this tone: other epistles show the disputes among the different orders and the tense political context of evangelization. In this article I analyze the characteristics that make this letter the most studied text of the conquest and the way accusation, defense and discursive resources used in novohispanic missionary chronicles and these epistles are intertwined.
