Historias de lagartos y de ranas: La Salamandra aquatique et noire de Feuillé (1714)

Abstract

El nombre científico que fue dado a la rana grande chilena, Calyptocephalella gayi, a lo largo del tiempo constituye un interesante caso de análisis para la historia de la ciencia. La rana recibió su nombre a mediados del S XIX, pero a fines de ese mismo siglo una observación particular determinó que 50 años más tarde el nombre le fuera cambiado por otro, nombre que en algún momento recibió también un lagarto gekkónido: caudiverbera. Por qué se dio ese cambio de nombre que se mantuvo durante casi 40 años, a pesar de algunas opiniones en contra. En buena medida pudo deberse a la falta de revisión de los textos originales que dieron origen a los nombres en pugna. Como quedará demostrado, la revisión de esos textos resultó crucial para dirimir finalmente la cuestión. La era de internet, en la que mucha información se encuentra disponible en línea, ha facilitado notablemente esta tarea, tornando este paso indispensable al momento de apoyar una idea u otra. Distinta habría sido la historia si hubiese existido internet -y sus facilidades- cuando la acción nomenclatorial (el cambio de un nombre científico a otro) tuvo lugar. Valga este caso como un ejemplo.

The scientific name that was given to the Chilean helmeted frog, Calyptocephalella gayi, over time constitutes an interesting case of analysis for the history of science. The frog received its name in the mid-nineteenth century, but at the end of that same century a particular observation determined that 50 years later the name was changed to for another one, a name that at some point also received a gekkonid lizard: caudiverbera. Why this name changed and lasted for almost 40 years, despite some opinions to the contrary. In large part, it could be due to the lack of revision of the original texts that gave rise to the conflicting names. As will be shown, the revision of these texts was crucial to finally settle the issue. The age of the Internet, in which much information is available online, has greatly facilitated this task, this indispensable step in supporting one idea or another. History would have been different if the internet - and its facilities - had existed when the nomenclatory action (the change from one scientific name to another) took place. Take this case as an example.
