Madres y esposas: ser mujer en la clase alta argentina

Abstract

Este artículo reconstruye las trayectorias y las experiencias formativas de diversas mujeres de la clase alta argentina para comprender las relaciones entre género y clase social. A partir de un abordaje socio-antropológico, que incluye tanto entrevistas en profundidad a mujeres y hombres de este grupo social como observaciones participantes, se documentan las prácticas y representaciones que modelan y regulan la vida de las mujeres en este grupo social. El artículo sostiene que las prácticas y los sentidos que construyen las mujeres de clase alta evidencian que las representaciones de género son un campo de disputa. En un contexto histórico que se ha caracterizado por la visibilización de las demandas feministas, la reivindicación de posturas conservadoras por parte de estas mujeres – en otras palabras, la apropiación de un rol de género subordinado – es parte de su lucha por conservar un lugar social de privilegio: el de la clase alta.

Mothers and wives: becoming a high-class woman in Argentina • This paper describes the trajectories and formative experiences of different women of the Argentine upper class with the purpose of understanding the link between gender and social class. Based on a socio-anthropological approach, which includes in-depth interviews with women and men of this social group as well as partici-pant observations, this paper explores the practices and representations that model and regulate the lives of women in this social group. It argues that the practices and meanings that upper-class women built show that gender representations are a field of dispute. In a historical context that has been characterized by the visibil-ity of feminist demands, conservative discourses and practices supported by these women – in other words, the appropriation of a subordinate gender role – is part of their struggle to preserve a privileged position: that of the upper class.
