La caracterización múltiple de la femineidad gigantea en los libros de caballerías castellanos (ss. XV-XVI)

Abstract

Las gigantas de los libros de caballerías castellanos son monstruosidades tan complejas como sus contrapartes masculinas, mostrando variaciones importantes aun en una misma obra. Sin embargo, esto no impide clasificarlas, ya que existen varias constantes a lo largo del género que así lo permiten. Buenas y malas, bellas u horribles, corteses o salvajes y benefactoras de cristianos o su peor pesadilla, las jayanas son capaces de asumir todas estas caracterizaciones, caracterizaciones que traslucen nociones estéticas, axiológicas y religiosas de diversa índole. Precisamente, el objetivo de este trabajo es explicar cada una de estas caras contrapuestas de la femineidad gigantea, para lo cual las examinaremos en una selección de exponentes del género que incluye grandes títulos y otros menos conocidos.

The giantesses of the Castilian romances of chivalry are monstrosities as complex as their male counterparts, showing important variations even in the same book. However, this does not prevent classifying them, since there are several constants throughout the genre that allow it. Good and bad, beautiful or horrible, courteous or wild and benefactors of Christians or their worst nightmare, giantesses are able to assume all these characterizations, characterizations that show aesthetic, axiological and religious notions of various types. Precisely, the objective of this work is to explain each of these opposing faces of gigantic femininity, for which we will examine them in a selection of exponents of the genre that includes great titles and others less known.
