Lingüistas de aquí: Notas sobre la correspondencia entre Américo Castro y Arturo Costa Álvarez

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende ofrecer algunas coordenadas generales para situar en su contexto los materiales que se presentan al final: tres cartas de Américo Castro a Arturo Costa Álvarez, remitidas durante su breve estancia en 1923 como primer director del Instituto de Filología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, además de una respuesta manuscrita de Costa Álvarez en la última de ellas, que nunca sería enviada a su remitente, sino que quedaría en el archivo de Costa Álvarez como primer registro de lo que sería un largo e intenso conflicto entre este filólogo autodidacta de la ciudad de La Plata y los sucesivos directores enviados desde el Centro de Estudios Históricos de Madrid, a cargo de Ramón Menéndez Pidal. Además, se formulan algunas hipótesis con respecto al aporte que este material puede realizar a la comprensión de la historia de los debates en torno a la institucionalización de las ciencias del lenguaje en el país, impulsada por la creación del mencionado instituto.

This paper aims to offer some general hints to contextualize the materials presented in the appendix: three letters from Américo Castro to Arturo Costa Álvarez, sent during his brief stay in 1923 in Argentina as the first Director of the Instituto de Filología of the University of Buenos Aires, as well as a handwritten reply from Costa Álvarez in the last of them, which was never to be submitted to the sender, but perhaps just to stay there as a landmark for the beginning of an intense and long lasting conflict between this autodidact philologist from La Plata and the authorities sent from Menéndez Pidal’s Centro de Estudios Históricos in Madrid to run Buenos Aires’ brand new Institute. In addition, we sketch some hypotheses regarding the contribution that this material can make to the understanding of the history of those debates surrounding the institutionalization of the language sciences in the country, triggered by the creation of the aforementioned institute.
