El viaje de Daniel Lamb a bordo del Breakwater (1830-1831): Un relato lobero de Patagonia y Malvinas

Abstract

En 1831 tres naves loberas estadounidenses fueron capturadas en Puerto Soledad,Malvinas, en nombre de Luis Vernet, comandante político y militar de las islas, nombrado así por elgobierno de Buenos Aires. En represalia, a fines de ese año, la USS Lexington atacó Puerto Soledaddejando la colonia vulnerable y sin defensas ante la ocupación británica que tuvo lugar dos añosdespués. El relato inédito de un tripulante de uno de los barcos apresados, Daniel Wightman Lamb,ofrecen otra mirada uno de los incidentes más narrados en la historia argentina del archipiélagomalvinense. El viaje de Daniel Lamb a bordo de la goleta lobera Breakwater, que logró escapar a lasautoridades malvinenses, retrata detalladamente la experiencia de trabajo y vida de uno de loscientos de marinos que frecuentaron la región, al tiempo que hace posible comprender los límites yposibilidades de las autoridades regionales ante esa explotación.

In 1831 three sealing vessels were captured in Port Soledad, Malvinas, on behalf of Luis Vernet, the political and military commandant of the islands under the ruling of the Buenos Aires’ government. In retaliation, at the end of that year, the USS Lexington attacked Port Soledad leaving the colony vulnerable and defenseless against the British occupation that took place two years later. The unpublished memories of a Breakwater crew member, Daniel Wightman Lamb, allow us to consider another representation of one of the most narrated incidents in the national history of the Malvinas Islands. Daniel Lamb’s voyage aboard the sealing schooner Breakwater, which managed to escape the Malvinas authorities, portrays the work and life experience of one of hundreds of sailors who frequented the region. Moreover, the memoirs make it possible to understand the limits and possibilities of the regional authorities facing this exploitation.
