Un altar doméstico y un enterramiento: Revisitando el juicio contra Josefa Apasa, una mujer indígena acusada de hechicería y supersticiones en La Paz (Charcas) a principios del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Se propone una aproximación a los objetos por los cuales Josefa Apasa fue acusada de hechicería y supersticiones en la Audiencia de Charcas, a principios del siglo XVIII. Se identifican los posibles usos y significados que tenían en su vida y se indaga en sus probables contextos de producción, circulación y audiencia. Para ello, se revisita el expediente judicial resguardado en la Biblioteca Central de la Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (La Paz, Bolivia), Sección Manuscritos, n.° 56. Este abordaje permite adentrarnos en el barrio donde vivía y en sus relaciones familiares y sociales, así como exhumar su altar y el enterramiento en su patio. Se plantean ejercicios interpretativos sobre las formas de violencia hispana contra conocimientos indígenas y las pervivencias de memorias y prácticas del pasado andino, presentes y activas como expresiones de la recepción indígena del cristianismo en el contexto de la colonialidad hispana.

This article studies the objects for which Josefa Apasa was accused of practicing witchcraft and superstitions in the Charcas’ Audiencia during the eighteenth century. The possible uses and meanings of those objects in her life are identified, while their probable contexts of production, circulation, and audience are also investigated. For this purpose, we revisit the court record kept in the Central Library of the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (La Paz, Bolivia), Manuscripts section, No. 56. This approach lets us delve into her neighborhood, her family and social relationships, and exhume her altar and her burial site at her courtyard. We propose interpretive exercises about forms of Hispanic violence against indigenous knowledge, and about the survival of memories and practices of the Andean past, which were present and active as expressions of indigenous reception of Christianity in the context of Hispanic coloniality.
