La formación de los aspirantes a guardiamarinas de la Armada Argentina en la fragata Sarmiento (1899-1938)

Abstract

Este artículo se propone analizar parte del proceso de formación de la oficialidad de la Armada Argentina, durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX, tomando el caso de los aspirantes a guardiamarinas de la Escuela Naval Militar, mientras realizaban su viaje de instrucción a bordo del buque escuela fragata Presidente Sarmiento. Para ello se consultaron memorias y relatos de navegación, elaborados por tripulantes de diferente rango y condición, y algunos artículos de revistas y boletines de la época. Durante el viaje de instrucción los cadetes y aspirantes, hasta el momento jóvenes e inexpertos, se convertían en hombres de mar, al adquirir un conjunto de habilidades y aptitudes y superar una serie de prácticas, ritos y pruebas. Identificando y comprendiendo las características de ese proceso, resulta posible no solo observar el comportamiento que la Armada esperaba de sus mandos más jóvenes, sino comprender algunos de los rasgos identitarios que definían al oficial naval argentino.

This article aims to analyse part of the training process of the Argentine Navy officers during the first decades of the twentieth century, taking the case of the midshipmen candidates of the Escuela Naval Militar (Naval Military School) while they were on their training voyage aboard the training ship frigate Presidente Sarmiento. For this purpose, memoirs and navigation accounts, written by crew members of different rank and status, and some articles from magazines and bulletins of the time, were consulted. During the training voyage, the cadets and aspirants, hitherto young and inexperienced, became seamen, acquiring skills and aptitudes and overcoming a series of practices, rites and tests. By identifying and understanding the characteristics of this process, it will be possible to observe the behaviour that the Argentine Navy expected of its youngest commanders and understand some of the identity attributes that defined the naval officer.
