Planes, trayectos y apropiación cultural sobre el ferrocarril S.S. Jujuy-La Quiaca: Pensando la valorización del patrimonio ferroviario en la Quebrada de Humahuaca, Argentina

Abstract

El ferrocarril que recorría gran parte de la Quebrada de Humahuaca en el noroeste argentino y unía la ciudad de San Salvador de Jujuy con La Quiaca en Bolivia se incluyó hace algunos años en el llamado Plan Belgrano de integración y desarrollo regional para su puesta en valor y vuelta en funcionamiento. El ferrocarril fue articulador de la región durante casi todo el siglo XX, forjó identidades y tradiciones aún prevalecientes en la memoria de los pobladores. Desmantelado en la década de 1990 posee interés público como patrimonio ferroviario dentro del valioso paisaje cultural de la Quebrada, declarada Patrimonio Mundial. Considerando los avances en las discusiones sobre la preservación sustentable del patrimonio y el manejo del capital cultural de las comunidades, este artículo ofrece una revisión de las intervenciones estatales sobre el ramal y de las condiciones de apropiación a las que está sujeto para pensar su efectiva valorización.

The railway that crossed a large part of the Quebrada de Humahuaca in north‑western Argentina and linked the city of San Salvador de Jujuy with La Quiaca in Bolivia was included a few years ago in the so‑called “Plan Belgrano” for regional integration and development for its rehabilitation and restoration to service. The railroad was the backbone of the region for almost the entire 20th century, forging identities and traditions that still prevail in the memory of the settlers. Dismantled in the 1990s, it has public interest as railway heritage with‑ in the valuable cultural landscape of the Quebrada, declared a World Heritage Site. Considering the advances in the discussions on the sustainable preservation of the heritage, and after surveying the present condition of the railway, this article analyses the State interventions on the branch and the appropriation processes to which it is subject in order to produce its rehabilitation.
